Expert writing instructors teach students the fundamentals of personal statement writing and guide them through the writing process. Students learn to express their self-awareness, imagination, curiosity, and ambitions in ways that make them attractive candidates to selective colleges. Students learn how to choose a topic, develop ideas, edit for content and style, and avoid common pitfalls that weaken an applicant’s chances of admission. Students will have the opportunity to leave the program with two to three different personal statement essays that are ready or nearly ready for submission as part of their college applications. In addition to expert writing instructors, four talented college counselors will be part of the camp faculty and will meet one-on-one with each student to help them customize a list of colleges to apply to, and map out an application timeline for the semester. Towards the end of the program, a College Dean of Admission will work with students to enhance their understanding of the college admission process.
Enhancing the formal written work, participants will take advantage of the culturally and environmentally rich setting of Hawaii. Swimming with sea turtles, hiking into remote valleys, working in a traditional taro patch, and exploring Volcano national park are some of the excursions planned.
